Where the Smart Money Went This April

If you thought the VC slowdown would last forever, April had other plans. While the number of funding rounds stayed modest, the amount of capital deployed skyrocketed which was largely because of huge bets on DeFi infrastructure and blockchain services.

The biggest buckets?

  • Blockchain Infrastructure
  • Blockchain Services
  • DeFi

Despite the ongoing AI hype in tech, crypto-native VCs are pouring serious money into building foundations, networks, infrastructure layers and next-gen DeFi ecosystems.

AI-related crypto projects got funding too, but it’s clear the April appetite shifted toward networks and liquidity, not just narratives.

Investor Hotlist

active investors
  • Guy Young topped the charts with two investments.
  • Names like Anatoly Yakovenko (Solana) and Balaji Srinivasan made strategic plays.

Angels are getting selective too, focusing less on chasing fads and more on backing infra-first ideas.

April VC Deal Flow: Big Money, Few Deals

Now, let’s talk numbers

crypto fundraising

Key Observations:

  • The biggest spike came in the last week of April, showing that large deals are stacking up as market confidence slowly rebuilds.
  • Most funding was concentrated in a few massive rounds
  • April’s final week alone nearly tripled the cumulative amount raised in the first three weeks.

But numbers only tell part of the story, let’s get a better insight from top VCs about where the industry is headed next.

Deal Sizes

weekly funding
  • Majority of deals fell into the $3–10M and $10–20M brackets.
  • A handful of $50M+ mega-rounds boosted overall totals.

Stage Breakdown

stage
  • Seed rounds dominated (29.62%) they’re still the VC favorite playground.
  • Series A and Strategic rounds stayed strong, signaling that post-seed traction is a beginning to take priority.

Category Focus

category
  • Blockchain Infrastructure saw a surge, no surprises given all the talk about modular networks and chain services.
  • DeFi still held its ground but in a more “matured” flavor, think liquid staking, RWAs (real world assets), and cross-chain liquidity.

Bitcoin-native DeFi is rising but Ethereum L2s still matter the same.

Crypto investor and writer Joel John, founder of Decentralised.co, explains crypto VC behavior in his latest research with one clear message.

Smart crypto VCs are not into chasing and creating narratives anymore. They’re backing networks with real traction, users, liquidity, developers, and aligned incentive layers.

A few key points from the report:

  • Bitcoin-native DeFi (like ICP’s Chain Fusion) is rising.
  • Solana’s DeFi TVL explosion (especially fueled by memecoins) drew attention.
  • Modular chains like Celestia and EigenLayer are on VC radar, so it’s not about flashy but the pipes and plumbing underneath.
  • Ethereum L2s still matter, but now it’s about ecosystem stickiness, not just token hype.

“Liquidity drives attention. Attention drives valuations.”

If you’re looking to spot the next big wins in crypto, start following the chains, not just the stories.

Updates in ICP Ecosystem

The Internet Computer (ICP) it’s quietly changing the game. And April has been crazy here.

Bitcoin DeFi Is Now Live on ICP

Thanks to Chain Fusion, native Bitcoin DeFi is no longer a theory now, it’s happening without centralized bridges or wrapped assets. This opens a whole new frontier for decentralized apps using Bitcoin liquidity.

ICP Token Unlock Nearing Its End

After two years of emissions, ICP’s token unlock period is almost over.

This means a stabilized supply and a cleaner investment narrative, one which is focused on actual network growth, not emissions sell pressure.

ICP HUB Canada & US Partner With Blockchain at Maryland

The team is building ecosystems.

Collaborations with leading university blockchain clubs like Blockchain at Maryland set the stage for next-gen developer adoption.

ICP Community Leaders Going Mainstream

Javier Arroyo Ferrer, leader at ICP Hub Canada & US was featured on The Edge of NFT Show, alongside industry voices like January Jones and Joshua Kriger, discussing Canada’s upcoming crypto elections and ICP’s growing relevance.

Another sign that ICP is looking to improve its impact to more than just the audience of developers, but also taking a part in shaping the policies and regulation of the Web3 world.

Quantum Leap Labs’ First Demo Day: A Major Milestone

Quantum Leap Labs, an accelerator backed by the Internet Computer Protocol and ICP Canada & UC, hosted its first-ever Demo Day on April 24, 2025 — showcasing projects built entirely on ICP.

Judges included heavyweights like:

  • Alexa Goldhar (Antler VC)
  • Matt Law (Outlier Ventures)
  • Arzu Tekir (Treeo VC)
  • Christopher Arnone (Plug and Play Tech Center)

ICP’s developer ecosystem is alive, ambitious, and shipping.

ICP’s Reverse Gas Model: How It Flips the Script

Unlike traditional blockchains where users pay gas, ICP uses a Reverse Gas model:

  • Developers pay a small amount to “preload” smart contracts.
  • Users interact with apps freely — no wallet popups, no signing transactions every step.
  • It feels exactly like Web2 apps — instant, seamless, and invisible.

Why Does This Matter?

  • Mass onboarding becomes easier — no onboarding friction.
  • dApps can go fully mainstream without confusing UX hurdles.
  • It’s a key reason why ICP can power entire decentralized frontends natively.

The future of Web3 will be about decentralization and usability. And ICP might just be first through that door.
