Crypto VC’s Aren’t cooling off
The total fundraising over the last month has clocked $1.77B across 122 deals with a late-May surge pushing numbers over the edge. May alone contributed over a billion dollars despite being the lowest deal count month since Jan 2021 (just 62 deals).
VCs are deploying with intent. Big rounds, tighter filters and more scrutiny on fundamentals.
VC Deal Flow , Who’s Investing in What?
The crypto VC scene is changing fast and there is a reshuffling of investment approaches in the crypto market. We’re seeing more capital deployed but with shifts in risk tolerance, sector focus and round dynamics.
So who’s taking the biggest checks?
Bigger Checks, Fewer Bets
The market leaned into fewer but far larger rounds. The dominant bracket?
- $3–10M rounds (32 deals), signaling growing confidence in mid-stage projects.
- $1–3M rounds (27 deals) remained active, mostly in infra and DeFi.
- $50M+ mega-rounds (9 deals) punched above their weight, pushing total funding to $3.67B — even with a decline in total deal volume.
While only 122 deals closed in this window, the capital flow remained high. This confirms one thing: size matters, and the bar is rising.
Where the Capital Is Going
The bar chart reveals a subtle but powerful trend — category diversification with an infrastructure anchor.
Top investor allocations by category (May–June):
- DeFi and GameFi led the round count.
- Blockchain Infrastructure and Blockchain Services received consistent support from every major VC.
- Meme tokens and Social saw minimal activity — narrative plays are officially on the back burner.
Investors aren’t following the hype — they’re backing stack-enabling tech.
The VCs Playing the Long Game
Let’s talk names. These are the funds actively writing checks, leading rounds and covering multiple verticals:
Leading the deal table this cycle was Coinbase Ventures with 7 investments, followed closely by Alliance DAO at 6. Animoca Brands, Selini Capital, Arbitrum Gaming Ventures, and Mirana Ventures each participated in 5 deals, showing a broad appetite across verticals.
Rounding out the top tier were a16z CSX and MH Ventures with 4 deals each balancing aggressive lead positions with ecosystem-aligned plays.
Top lead investors have been –
- a16z CSX
- Pantera Capital
- Jump Crypto
- Galaxy
- ConsenSys
These lead investors aren’t chasing memecoins. They’re backing real primitives: wallets, multichain infra, secure custody, and scalable dApps.
What Sector is Gaining Momentum?
The early 2024 trend of AI-flavored DeFi is cooling off. Let’s see what’s taking its place.
- Infrastructure tooling is back in fashion this month with dev tools, modular services and multichain frameworks taking the most investment
- GameFi is re-emerging not as play-to-earn gimmicks, but as immersive economies.
- DeFi continues to attract capital especially from liquid staking, real-world assets and multichain liquidity layers.
The data shows a move from narrative-driven allocation in the last few months to stack-based investing this month.
The VC market is no longer just about funding ideas, it’s about finding operational traction, cross-chain utility, and modular resilience.
Investors are scaling back the number of deals, but increasing quality, clarity, and conviction.
VC Report Snapshot – Q2 2025 Trends
This quarter is reinforcing what we’ve been watching unfold, crypto is now closely tied to global macro cycles. Despite broader risk-off sentiment, $25B in stablecoins entered circulation and it is signaling that capital is still flowing toward real utility.
Key Takeaways:
- Infra & custody tooling gained heat post-Bybit’s $1.4B exploit
- Memecoins cooled off hard, especially on Solana
- Circle’s IPO (if priced above $5B) could reignite late-stage appetite
Bottom line? The narrative era is fading and fundamentals are in the spotlight.
As capital chases utility, one protocol continues to deliver under-the-radar momentum, the Internet Computer Protocol.
Let’s break down what’s happening inside the ICP ecosystem.
What’s New in the ICP Ecosystem ?
ICP Turns 4 and It’s Graduating from Underdog to Deployer
Live from Zurich’s WCS25, the fourth anniversary townhall was a turning point for the protocol. No longer just “emerging,” ICP is actively shipping scalable, secure multichain solutions, and the industry is noticing.
The highlight of WCS25? Dominic Williams, Founder and Chief Scientist at DFINITY, unveiling the Self-Writing Internet and demoing Caffeine AI live on stage. Didn’t get to see it live? Catch the recording here.

🇨🇦 Canada Crypto Week: ICP in the Spotlight
ICP HUB Canada & US made a big impact at four top-tier events during Canada Crypto Week:
- May 13 – Blockchain Futurist Conference
Javier Arroyo Ferrer joined global Web3 leaders in a panel on the future of decentralized infrastructure. - May 14 – Family Office Investor Summit
Co-hosted with Quantum Leap Labs, the summit brought together VCs and family offices to explore staking strategies and tokenized asset flows. - May 14 – Consensus 2025 (by CoinDesk)
As an official Community Partner, ICP HUB showcased dev tools, dApps, and upcoming protocol upgrades. - May 15 – ICP & Nolcha @ Consensus
A standout art-meets-capital event inside a 1915 Toronto heritage gallery with panels “From Tokens to Trust” and ‘Building Web3: Blockchain Ecosystems That Win’ panels
“The momentum was real,” said HUB Lead Javier Arroyo Ferrer post event.
Coming Up: ICP Returns to UBC – July 14
ICP HUB heads back to Blockchain@UBC’s Summer Institute this July, reconnecting with top-tier academics and student devs. Expect more technical bootcamps, workshops, and early-stage incubation.
Web3 Wisdom: Learn Something New!
Amid the conference buzz and protocol milestones, one technical breakthrough stood out , quietly redefining how multichain apps can work without bridges.
Chain Key Signatures – The Bridge Killer
At the centre of ICP’s multichain promise is Chain Key Signatures, the engine behind Chain Fusion that’s now live and unlocking native Bitcoin DeFi on ICP.
So What Is It?
Chain Key Signatures enables smart contracts on ICP to sign transactions on other chains (like BTC or ETH), with no bridges, wrapped tokens or third-party validators.
One contract. One wallet. Total multichain control.
Why It’s a Game-Changer
- Multichain, no bridges: More secure, no bridge hacks.
- True asset control: Direct access to BTC/Ethereum wallets from ICP.
- dApp UX overhaul: One seamless layer and users don’t even know it’s cross-chain.
ICP’s Chain Key technology helps ICP gain composability as well as credibility in the multichain era.
That’s a Wrap for May!
From billion-dollar weeks to award-winning protocol credibility and Bitcoin DeFi going live on ICP, this was a defining month across capital, code and culture.
Capital. Code. Credibility. It’s all accelerating and we’ll be here to track every shift.
Until next time… Stay sharp. Stay curious. Stay decentralized.
