About ZEC

Zcash is a decentralized cryptocurrency designed to prioritize privacy and anonymity. It utilizes zk-SNARK zero-knowledge proof technology, enabling network nodes to validate transactions without exposing sensitive transaction details. Unlike many cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, which operate pseudonymously—meaning transactions can potentially be traced back to users through blockchain analysis—Zcash offers stronger privacy protections. By default, Zcash transactions conceal the sender, recipient, and transaction amount. However, users have the option to disclose this information for auditing or compliance purposes. Launched in 2016, Zcash was initially built on Bitcoin’s codebase. Its focus remains on providing enhanced privacy features while maintaining the security of a decentralized blockchain. Zcash was launched in 2016 by Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, a cypherpunk, computer security expert, and entrepreneur. Wilcox-O'Hearn is also the founder of the for-profit Electronic Coin Company (ECC), which oversees Zcash's development. With over 25 years of experience in cryptography and information security, Wilcox-O'Hearn has contributed to multiple projects. These include DigiCash (a now-defunct digital currency firm), the peer-to-peer data storage software Mojo Nation, and the Tahoe Least-Authority File Store filesystem. Additionally, he established Least Authority Enterprises, a technology company dedicated to enhancing digital security and protecting privacy rights. Wilcox-O'Hearn also co-created the BLAKE3 cryptographic hash function. Zcash’s primary advantage is its optional anonymity, offering a level of privacy not available with pseudonymous cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. ZEC transactions can be conducted in two ways: transparent or shielded. Transparent transactions function similarly to Bitcoin, from which Zcash’s codebase was originally derived. These transactions occur between public addresses and are recorded on an immutable public ledger (the blockchain). Essential details—such as the sending and receiving addresses and the transaction amount—are publicly visible. While these transactions do not directly reveal user identities, they expose public addresses, which can potentially be linked to real-world identities through blockchain analysis techniques. Shielded ZEC transactions, however, use zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge (zk-SNARKs) to enable fully private transactions on a public blockchain. The ledger confirms that a transaction occurred, but the sender, recipient, and amount remain hidden. This approach allows Zcash users to maintain privacy while benefiting from the security and decentralization of a permissionless digital currency. Zcash's tokenomics closely resemble those of Bitcoin, featuring a mineable token with a capped total supply of 21 million coins. New ZEC tokens are generated through "block subsidies." Each time a new block is added to the blockchain, a predetermined amount of coins is minted and divided between a "miner subsidy" (80%) and a "founders’ reward" (20%). The block subsidy undergoes periodic halvings to gradually reduce the issuance rate as the total supply approaches its limit. The miner subsidy is awarded to the miner who successfully adds the latest block, while the founders’ reward is allocated among the Electronic Coin Company (ECC) founders, the Zcash Foundation, ECC itself, and its employees. A key change occurred with the Zcash Canopy upgrade, which eliminated the Founders Reward and redistributed the remaining 20% to the Major Grants Fund (8%), ECC (7%), and the Zcash Foundation (5%). Zcash has seen notable trading activity across various currency pairs since its launch. *(Note: Time-specific details about upgrades and halvings have been omitted to maintain an evergreen format.)* The Zcash network is secured by the **proof-of-work** **SHA-256** hash function, which is part of the SHA-2 family of algorithms—the same as Bitcoin. *(Removed external links and kept the explanation concise while maintaining factual accuracy.)* Zcash is a well-known cryptocurrency available for purchase on several major exchanges, including: - Binance - HitBTC - Huobi Global - BKEX - OKEx For more details on where to buy Zcash, visit the respective exchange websites.
